US President Barack Obama has called the proposed Ugandan Anti-Homosexuality Bill "odious". The president was speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast on Friday.
The annual event, which is sponsored by secretive Christian association The Fellowship, is attended by every US president.
According to AFP reports, Obama acknowledged that some at the event held differing views on gay rights, but said: "Surely we can agree that it is unconscionable to target gays and lesbians for who they are, whether it is here in the United States or… more extremely, in odious laws that are being proposed most recently in Uganda."
The bill proposes issuing the death penalty to some homosexuals. David Bahati, the Ugandan MP who introduced the bill, has claimed he was invited to the event. However, it seems his invitation was later withdrawn.
