Mary Portas and Emmerdale actress Alicya Eyo are amongst those to attend Britain’s biggest gathering of LGBT+ families took place during London’s Pride celebrations over the weekend.
Out with the Family, an event that brings together LGBT+ parents and their children, was attended by approximately 2000 people, say organisers.
It is the first time that Out with the Family has had such a big presence at London Pride. The ‘rainbow fete’ included children's activities, a barbecue and provided an opportunity for LGBT+ parents to socialise.
TV presenter and retail guru Mary Portas and partner Melanie Rickeypartner Melanie Rickey attended the occasion, as did celebrity chef Allegra McEvedy and Emmerdale actress Alicya Eyo.
According to the UK’s Office for National Statistics, in 2011, 8,000 same-sex couples had children in their care. In 2012, that number had risen to over 12,000
Out with the Family
was started in 2013 by actor and gay parent, Charlie Condou
, and diversity specialist Linda Riley. Actress Sophie Ward is also an ambassador for the initiative.
Charlie Condou said: “The Out with the Family rainbow fete was an incredible success. It was inspiring to see so many LGBT families come together at London Pride. It is often difficult for same-sex couples with children to meet each and provide support and encouragement. It is why this event is so important.”
Linda Riley said: “One of the next big challenges for the LGBTI community is promoting acceptance and ensuring there is support for the goring number of LGBTI families. Out with the Family contributes towards doing just that."
